Or if you are reading this article because you want to learn more about what really does make a great teacher, hopefully you can learn to have more appreciation and good will towards teachers in your life or your kids’ lives.
A Good Teacher Is Friendly
Most people will agree that whether you are a public school teacher, private school teacher or a New Jersey special education teacher you will always find one specific personality trait that all teachers possess and that’s friendliness. Not only is it important for a teacher to be friendly with the students they teach, but it’s also important that they give off a sense of being sociable and easy to talk to. This allows students, parents and other people in the school (other teachers for instance) feel like they can come to that teacher with any issues they might be having pertaining to a certain child, etc. Most great teachers can get along with everyone, not just good students, but all students and everyone in the realm of that school.
Good Communication
As one would expect, a great teacher is going to be good at communication. This allows students to feel like they can come to the teacher with any issues they might be having or any problems they might be having in class like learning new things, saying new words, spelling, etc. Good communication also tends to leave a line of communication open, so even if a child, teacher, parent, admin, etc. doesn’t have an issue with something right this very second, the line of communication is always open, so people always feel like they can come to the teacher and talk about whatever whenever. This is also a really useful trait when it comes to parents. Parents may need to talk to you about sensitive subjects such as a child’s learning disability where they need a line of communication to be open so they can feel like they can freely talk to you about things pertaining to their child.
Patient and Kind
Let’s be honest, school can get really hectic and it’s easy for a teacher to get flustered and panic at certain times. But, you want a teacher that can hold their own. You want a teacher that can handle all sorts of situations no matter the difficulty. You want someone that can handle different personalities of children, everything from every day public school situations, to some more hectic situations, a New Jersey special education teacher needs to be able to handle everything and anything that gets thrown their way. A GREAT teacher needs to do all of this and not get angry, mad, impatient, annoyed or irritated. Kindness is also key! You will find that kids tend to respond to teacher more, when that teacher is kind and has a kind personality. Kids can feel and will feel more comfortable coming to a teacher that is easy going, understanding and kind, than to a teacher that is short tempered, mean or unsympathetic. When a teacher is kind, kids tend to learn more about mutual respect and how to gain deeper relationships with teachers as well as other students. When you have a teacher who is patient and kind, you will start to see just how productive a classroom and all of the students in that classroom will be and how it will in turn lead to many other positive results.
